Plainview is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York. The community is served by the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District. The land that encompasses Plainview was purchased by Robert Williams in 1648 and it was considered a decent area for farming with access to small local ponds. The area was called Mannatto Hill (a name that appears on the 1695 Bethpage Purchase), for the Native American word, manitou, meaning “god” or “spirit.” In 1837 the Long Island Railroad was expanded to nearby Hicksville and this spurred a boom in the local farming industry, the main economic base of Manetto Hill. Residents petitioned the U.S. Postal Service to establish an office in their community, but in order to do so, the community’s name had to be changed in order to avoid confusion with an Upstate community. In 1885 the hamlet was renamed Plainview, for its views of the Hempstead Plains. Plainview remained an agricultural community until the end of World War II and it was known for growing cucumbers for the famous Heinz pickle factories in Farmingdale and Hicksville.
