Malverne is a village on the South Shore of Long Island in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. The village is served by the Malverne Union Free School District. Originally settled by the Rockaway tribe and the earliest western settlements can be dated back to approximately 1790, at which time it was known as Norwood. This name was changed because there was another Norwood in New York State. Malverne was originally spelled without the last ‘e,’ but when the Long Island Railroad built a station in the village, they adjusted the spelling and the village ultimately followed.
