Copiague is a hamlet and census-designated place on the South Shore of Long Island in the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County, New York. The name Copiague comes from a Merrick Indian word, meaning “sheltered harbor” or “sheltered place.” Baymen, farmers and traders settled originally settled the area. Copiague was once a large Italian community on Long Island and parts of the hamlet were once designed to resemble Venice and classic Italian scenery. The ethnic makeup of the town is now more diverse and Copiague is one of Long Island’s most culturally rich communities.
